We merged a Reform and Conservative school and came up with a creative and unusual policy.  I'm pretty sure you will think it's controversial.  It is attached.

The Reform school had had a local, organic, healthy lunch service with composting and washable trays...and was very food values conscious.  Kids were allowed to bring anything from home but pork or shellfish.  There was no policing of lunches.

The Conservative school had a kosher hot lunch option from the kosher deli with disposable paper plates, etc.  Kids were allowed to bring only dairy from home.  Many of the kids and parents did not like bringing dairy only and were looking for a change. Kids who had lunches with inappropriate foods received a dignified phone call home to parents.

You can see what we came up with to satisfy both communities attached.  Overall, it's certainly made the Reform Jews feel at home in a Ravsak school.  The Conservative families are largely fine too.  Our Orthodox families (few) would love to see a change.  The people most opposed are the ones who don't eat here - rabbis, grandparents, etc.

Enjoy,
Cheryl
