One of Prizmah’s core beliefs is that strong leadership leads to stronger schools. By deepening the talent pool and investing in professional and lay leaders, we can create conditions for schools to become even more vibrant centers of learning and Jewish community. We unabashedly promote the perspective that one of the highest priorities for schools is the need to retain and attract top talent, to make it possible for more ‘ovdei Hashem’ to find successful careers leading our institutions. There is a unique challenge for Orthodox schools and yeshivas in addressing this need. As of the start of this research project in late 2023, 54% of non-Orthodox Jewish day schools and independent schools are led by women and fewer than 22% of Orthodox schools have women as their senior leaders. Our goal in this study was to discover patterns that can help engender further conversations related to women in senior leadership positions in Orthodox schools. The findings of this report reflect the complexities and nuance of Orthodox schools and are relevant for anyone who cares about the future of Orthodox day schools and for anyone who is on a career path in these schools.
