Reflections on Cooki Levy, z”l

Dr. Marc N. Kramer
Former Executive Director of RAVSAK

It is with great sadness that I share word of the passing of Frances "Cooki" Levy. Said simply, the Jewish day school world has lost a giant.

During her 23 years at Akiva School, Cooki touched the lives of so many Akiva families and staff and embodied the true spirit of the school. Through her vision, leadership and hard work, Cooki helped shape the school today and set the direction for its future.

Following her august tenure at Akiva, Cooki served as a mentor in the DSLTI training program for several seasons. She then became the founding director of RAVSAK’s Head of School Professional Excellence Program, a head of school professional development program that she led for five years, and continued leading HoSPEP at the launch of Prizmah. It is not an overstatement to state that between these two programs, Cooki has had a direct impact on Jewish day school leadership in schools large and small from across all of North America. More recently, Cooki returned to Montreal, first to serve as Akiva's Interim Head of School and then to serve as the Interim Director of BJEC. Even during this very challenging time, Cooki continued to leave her indelible and incredible mark on the day school world.

In her passing, we have lost a teacher, a mentor, a colleague and a friend.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Cooki's husband, Dr. Barry Levy and children; Daniel (Debra) Levy, David (Karen) Levy and Dr. Jonathan (Meredith) Levy, and their respective families.
